2013 Six Nations Championship, known as the RBS 6 Nations as the tournament is sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland. England defeated Italy by scoring 18-11 on Sunday at Twickenham Stadium in London.

England will face Wales in Cardiff on Saturday (16th March) with the opportunity of winning their first RBS Six Nations Grand Slam in a decade after stuttering to victory over Italy.

England could have effectively wrapped it up yesterday, had they put Italy to the sword in the manner of all previous encounters at Twickenham, but in the end they were clinging on for the win as Italy pressed relentlessly in the final 10 minutes as they sought the converted try that would have tied the match, and it took all of England’s resolve to keep them at bay.

Six penalties from the boot of Toby Flood dragged his side to victory into a 12-3 lead at the interval, overtaking Jonathan Webb as his country’s fourth-highest point’s scorer.

Flood’s metronomic boot saved England. Lancaster had demanded a performance of more than just character and England played with pace and variety in the first 15 minutes.

Mako Vunipola got under Martin Castrogiovanni at the first scrum and a huge England drive allowed Flood to kick his side into a second-minute lead.

Flood continued his faultless performance with the boot and England’s defense held firm in the face of Italian attacks that kept their title and Grand Slam ambitions alive.
